Every year coming to a close brings with it a reflection not just on the passage of time in the for us personally but also on a world shared. For artists the passage of time is marked tangibly in works they produce in a way that is poignant and intimate, as well as exhibitions they take part in publicly. The separation of personal and public is not a sustainable option of a life in art. The world demands of artists a dramatic honesty never required of any other vocation; an almost unsustainable standard of personal accountability to multitudes as a flipside of being blessed with a talent. Unshared, this burden is simply too much!
At First Floor Gallery Harare from inception, we have made a commitment to rise together and to lighten each other’s art and life burdens by walking together for the past fifteen years. Messe Messe is about the value of working together and recognising each other in the artistic journey, which is one of the most uneven and unpredictable roads one could ever choose.
While we can rely on every calendar year to deliver its staple challenges and learning opportunities, what makes each year truly memorable are the moments where art triumphs over adversity, enabling each of us to see more, feel more and be more. Multiplied by fifteen, there is a treasury of wonderful growth, cherished friendships and incredible art.
Messe Messe 2024 is a tiny kaleidoscope of gifts of collaboration and bringing magnificently different talents and personality, which come to life in conversation with each other and with their equally diverse and magnificent audience.
At the end of 2024 we are infinitely grateful for who we are and with whom we are on this extraordinary path of Art.
