Helen Teede
Biography
Born 1988 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Lives and works between Italy and Harare, Zimbabwe.
She has a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a Masters in Visual Art (Laurea Magistrale in Arti Visive) from IUAV University, Venice, Italy.
One of the most accomplished painters of her generation, Teede juxtaposes raw pigment, applied in fluid washes, with oil-painted figurative elements - a magpie gathering of images and life drawing. Her paintings are dream-like and expansive, with objects or bodies appearing and disappearing in pools of colour and dynamic brushwork.
She draws from personal experience and the psychological layering of physical presence in a place. Interested in the body as a political subject, she explores biopower and the ways we are entangled with the world. For Teede, raw pigments and oil paint have a living quality that allows for a responsive, phenomenological visual language. Her work is an ongoing enquiry into the tension between material and image, a duality that she sees as specific to painting.
Teede’s work has appeared in numerous institutional exhibitions, notably a survey of Zimbabwean painting at the Zeitz MOCAA Museum (2018, Cape Town) and the Norval Sovereign African Art Prize (2022, Cape Town) and L’Ecole de Harare (Fondation Blachère, France). In 2025, Teede graduated as part of the inaugural cohort of the Tracey Emin Artist Residency in Margate, UK.
Teede is represented by First Floor Gallery in Harare.
